CHAPTER
VIRGINIA
ASSOCIATION OF SURVEYORS
The Trig-Star program is an annual competition sponsored by
the National Society of Professional Surveyors and is administered
on a statewide basis by the Virginia Association of Surveyors.
The program’s goal is to recognize and stimulate the best
students of trigonometry in school districts across the State of
Virginia utilizing competition with local Chapter awards and State
awards of savings bonds. The
Trig-Star program is designed to:
1.
Promote excellence in the mastery of trigonometry in high
schools.
2.
Honor high school students who have demonstrated their
superior skills among classmates at the local, state and national
levels.
3.
Acquaint high school students with the use and practical
applications of trigonometry in the surveying and mapping
professions.
4.
Build an awareness of the surveying and mapping professions
among mathematically skilled high school students, career guidance
counselors and high school math teachers.
Trig-Star
contestants are measured through survey math problems completed as
a timed exercise held at the local high schools.
The top three contestants are honored at the local Chapter
level and their respective test scores are forwarded to the VAS
state office for statewide competition.
The top three state winners are selected and presented with
awards. The Virginia State champion is invited to compete nationally
at the National Society of Professional Surveyors annual
competition. This
final competition is completed through one additional survey test
which is also a timed exercise completed by the student and
administered by the local Trig-Star sponsor.
